Holy Bible in Tamil Language:

Over 3 hundred years ago, the first Indian bible was translated in Tamil by a German missionary January 3, 1714. Being first Biblical translation in an Indian language, it was historic moment in Indian – Christian Literature.

Bartholomaus Ziengenbalgm, who was the first Protestant missionary, came to India during 1706 with fellow countrymen Heinrich Plutschau, upon request by the King of Denmark. They arrived to Danish coastal town Trankebar (today known as Tarangambadi) in Tamil Nadu; they got bad welcome from the Hindu natives and Europeans for different reasons. Locals Hindus felt threatened by the incoming and possible imposition of Christianity and the Danish officials feared that new converts would stand to challenge the colonizers authority.

Bartholomaus Ziengenbalgm soon started to learn Tamil language and started his work of translating New Testament, with the help of Johann Ernst Gründler. Although he completed the translation work in 1711, with no printing preset in the region, he used Indian scribes to copy the scripts in palm leaves with iron stylus. From the ancient times, these techniques are used by locales for the creation of several Indian manuscripts.

Ziengenbalgm is the one who requested printing press to be sent to Tamilnadu to record his Bible Translation. By 1714, after several revision to his text and replacement of larger text by smaller cast one that was reportedly cast specially from lids of metal cheese boxes by the printer, Johann Adler. His effort resulted to India’s first bible in local language; he even worked on Tamil Dictionary, but unable to complete the process of translating Old Testament as he passed away in 1719.

His contribution to India is importing printing press and biblical translation was considered immense contribution.  The remaining translation work was completed by German missionary, Benjamin Schultze, and published in Tranquebar in 1728. Later, another German missionary Philip Fabricius, spend over 24 years on the translation, which was published in 1777.

In 19th century The British and Foreign Bible Society was established, in association with William Carey bible was translated into several Indian languages. In Tamil language, Dr. Buchanan started his journey in 1806.

We don’t want bread or money from you, but we want the Word of God.

The first project of Bible Society in Tamil was given to C. T. E. Rhenius, he started the work under the Church Missionary Society at Tirunelveli. He brought New Testament in 1833 and in the year 1840 the Bible Society published its first edition of the whole Bible in Tamil, the Old Testament consisting of the translation of Fabricius and the New Testament that of Rhenius.

Later, Jaffna translation called the Tentative Version was published in 1850. After several rejections, a revision committee representative of several missions working in South India, with Dr. Henry Bower as chief translator, was appointed in 1857. The New Testament was published in 1863 and the Old Testament in 1868, but this version also gained some dissatisfaction in north Ceylon and a conference of delegates.

After several revisions, a mutually accepted version of the whole Bible called the Union Version, it was published in 1871. It was approved by community and replaced the entire previous version and gained affection of all Churches in Indian and Ceylon. Later, The Lutheran Church continued to use the Fabricius version.

In 2016, the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures was released by Jehovah’s Witnesses as a complete Bible translation in Tamil. This replaced the earlier partial translation comprising only the New Testament.  It was published online with mobile versions released through JW Library application in App stores. Source Wikipedia
